This incense burner is made of the unique Chinese purple clay or Zisha from Yixing, Jiangsu of China featuring a stout, smiling buddha, the Maitreya or Milefo, in robe with a largely exposed pot belly stomach symbolic for happiness, good luck, and plenitude. Milefo represents the Buddha of the future, also known as the Laughing Buddha.
On his right hand holds a Yuanbao (a gold or silver ingot that was used as currency in ancient China) to represent wealth and at his left hand carries a cloth sack, which never empties, and is filled with many precious items, including rice plants (indicating wealth), sweets for children, food, and the woes of the world.
Engraved at the back is the Chinese character "Fo" (buddha), at the front of the base dish inscribed with "Zhao Cai Jin Bao" for bringing in wealth and treasure, and at back "Bao Dai Yi Kai, Huang Jin Wan Liang" meaning that by opening his treasure sack comes out with ten thousand taels of gold.
Place the incense coil in the base dish and the smoke will be evacuated from his mouth.
